Hi, today im going to share with you my Struggles of Theodor Herzl project!
Family issues
Theodor Herzl and his family had many struggles. He had an unhappy marriage with Julie Naschauer. He was always absent because of his Zionist goals. This made Julie unhappy; she also had little interest in Theodor’s Zionist dream. He also spent most of his money on the Zionist campaign which created financial problems for his family.
How did he deal with it?
He did not really handle it or try to fix it; he just kept going and hurting his family.
How I think it impacted him personally.
With all of the issues at home his dedication to Zionism created and escaped from his unhappy home life.
How did he handle it?
Theodor Herzl dealt with his lack of funding problem by looking for support from rich Jewish philanthropists. He also went to international leaders. He also sacrificed his personal money. Even with all his hard world he died only raising a tiny fraction of the amount of money he believed would be enough to make a Jewish state.
How I think it impacted him personally.
Herzl spent a lot of his money on the cause which hurt his family financially and hurt his relationship with them.
Depression
How did he handle it?
Theodor Herzl handled his depression with his love for Zionism. The Zionist project gave new meaning to his life. This also gave him a way to express his energy and drive.
How I think it impacted him personally.
His depression motivated his Zionist dreams. Due to the fact that he was so sad, this dream of Zionism provided his life with a continued purpose. This allowed him to keep fighting and working in an attempt to see his dreams come to reality in some way.
Today was Dreyfus’s public degradation. I couldn’t believe that a Jewish man who served his country was being accused of committing treason without substantial evidence. The entire audience was chanting “death to the Jews”. This showed me how bad antisemitism has gotten. The question remains: What can we do about antisemitism as a whole?
I know in my heart that something has to be done. I originally thought Jews could fit in with society, but maybe I was wrong. Assimilation is not the answer to this age-old problem. There must be some way to get rid of all this hatred. I just need time to comprehend what has just happened. As I sit here and write this entry, my thoughts are focused on one idea: the Jews must have their own state. To survive, we cannot simply co-exist in another nation; we must have our own.

Julie doesn’t have any interest in my Zionist goal. I believe she is not interested because of the financial and personal struggles that come with it. I just wish she would try to understand how important this could be to the Jewish people. I’m going to continue with my work even if she doesn’t agree with it. My mom doesn’t like Julie, and I think that’s making her more distant. I think the problems with my mom are also making Julie less interested in my goals.
My being away from home so often is affecting my relationship with Julie and the kids. They seem distant. Even though it’s affecting my relationship with my family, I need to keep working. In the end, this will help support a greater cause. If this Jewish state becomes a reality, maybe they will see what this will do for the Jewish people.

So far, trying to gain support has been difficult. I have tried to get the Orthodox Jews to support Zionism, but it seems they don’t want to. The Orthodox Jews are objecting to my offers of a Jewish state and Zionism. I have tried so many things to persuade them. Somehow, with all my efforts, they still disagree. I will still continue to try to persuade them. Their support is so important because they have a deep attachment to the land of Israel which will help the Jewish movement.
I promised to respect and acknowledge their religious traditions. They said they want to wait for the Messiah to come before returning to the Holy Land. I understand they want to wait, but that could be in thousands of years. We may not have that kind of time. Establishing a state now will help the Jewish people in many ways.

During this project, I learned about Theodor Herzl and his struggles and determination. Even with so many people disagreeing with his Zionist goals, he pushed through to try to achieve his dream. He hosted the First Zionist Congress and became the very first president of the World Zionist Organization. Even though he never saw the Jewish state come to life, he played a big role in its upbringing through all his efforts. With all the issues and hardships in his life, he still managed to push forward to create the Jewish state we know today. The lesson you can learn from Theodor Herzl’s journey is the transformation of a vision to a reality and how almost impossible dreams can become real. Overall if I was in Herzl’s position I would do a lot of things differently but I would still work hard to achieve my dream.
